Frequently Asked Questions
What are the member institutions of the Research Consortia?
The GCC member institutions are Baylor College of Medicine, Rice University, University of Houston, University of Texas Health Science Center, University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center and University of Texas Medical Branch. Some Research Consortia have additional affiliate members. The John S. Dunn Gulf Coast Consortium for Chemical Genomics includes, in addition to the GCC member institutions, Texas Southern University, The Methodist Hospital Research Institute, University of Texas at Austin, and University of Texas at El Paso
Where is the Gulf Coast Consortia located?
The GCC is located in the heart of the Texas Medical Center in Houston, Texas, at the BioScience Research Collaborative, 6500 Main Street. The staff offices from space generously provided by Rice University, but spends time at each member institution.
When was the GCC formed?
The GCC was formed in March of 2001.
Do the Research Consortia fund research?
The GCC seeks funding for both research but does not independently endow research grants. For some research grants funded to consortia and clusters, the staff acts as the functional administrators for grants. The GCC also seeds funding for seed grant programs which are administered by the GCC to fund collaborative research among GCC members.
One goal of the GCC is to provide a vehicle for the member institutions to secure funding that no one institution would pursue alone. By working together, we are able to bring new and innovative grants to the Texas Medical Center area.
How does a new cluster form and join the GCC?
New clusters form when faculty come together around a common goal or interest, establish a working vision, and engage interest among the broader faculty community in the GCC. When there is critical mass to commit to a shared vision, the researchers are encouraged to apply to the GCC Oversight Committee for the formation of a new cluster.
